Our home may be the place where we feel safe and secure but the fact is that more than 70% of all injuries take place in the home. A higher risk of accident is more common in houses that have children and elderly people. Because of this it is important to make some home safety improvements that will make sure your loved ones do not come to any harm.

Home Safety Improvements for Children

If you have children in your home then you will need to do some childproofing. The first step in home childproofing is to walk around and assess areas, furniture, equipments and other materials in your home that may harm your child. You can then plan and do some improvements like you can cover furniture that has sharp or pointed edges, put some cable tidy’s on electrical cables to put them out of reach and cover electrical sockets, and put some carpets or other flooring materials on the floor if the floor is slippery. You can also call and hire home childproofing service if you want this to be accomplished professionally.

Home Safety Improvements for the Elderly

Elderly people are prone to accidents because they have impaired vision, hearing loss, weakness and unsteady gait. There are some safety improvements you can do to make your home a safer place for them. First, you need to provide rooms located in the ground floor for them. This way they will not need to go up and down the stairs which is dangerous for them. You need to make some safety modifications in the bathroom area as well since most accidents of senior people happen in this place. You can place handle bars on the wall on the shower area that they can easily grab on for support. You can ask professionals to help you modify the bathroom. They know exactly what to do and the necessary things needed to be set up not only in the bathroom but the rest of the house as well.

Home Safety Accessories

In addition to doing some home safety improvements, you also need to provide necessary emergency items like a clear list of emergency service phone numbers of fire department, 911 or police department and poison control service. This way it is easier for the people in your home to call these services in case of emergency.  You also need to make sure that you have up-to-date medicines like antihistamine, cough and fever medicine, decongestant, etc. It is also important that you have a well-stocked first aid kit in your home. You need to routinely check if your kit contains the necessary items like bandages, wipes, antiseptic ointment, scissors, safety pins, instant cold packs and other significant first aid supplies. You may also want to provide CPR kits with portable defibrillators for the elderly in your home but of course this would mean that you or someone in your family need to undergo some CPR training course.

While it is impossible to totally eliminate the risk of accidents in the home, doing some safety improvements can lessen the risk and supplying emergency materials can quickly aid the victim if ever an accident do happen.
