A new sunscreen formula doesn’t mean that you can stop doing the slip, slop, slap

If you see sunscreens labelled SPF50+ later this year, don’t get excited and spend hours roasting in the sun.

The reality is the proposed 50+ rating, which may come into effect later this year or early next year, is only a one percent improvement from an SPF30+ rating in terms of blocking harmful rays.

Since the 1900s, The Australian Government has capped the maximum rating at 30+, despite enhanced sunscreen technology taking some formulations up to SPF90 or higher. However, while SPF30+ protects against 96.7% of the UVB rays, there is only a slight improvement seen in SPF50+, protecting up to 98% of the rays.

SPF, also known as the sun protection factor is the numerical indication which tells you the additional time a product will permit you to stay outside in the sun before your skin starts to burn. According to the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency , a sunscreen which is rated to SPF 15+ can offer a fair-complexion person 15 times more protection for their expose skin than if they didn’t apply any sunscreen lotion. So if a person starts to burn after 10 minutes in the sun, correctly applied SPF 15 will provide a protection for 10 times longer or 150 minutes.

Nonetheless, sunscreen is very seldom utilized in real life. This is primarily because it is still in the testing stage and the lotion sweats and peels off. Therefore, never presume that you are safe for the whole period. Your best bet is to re-apply a high-factor sunscreen every two hours.

The nano effect

Over the past few years, the use of nanotechnology in sunscreens has caused controversy. The nanotechnology technology which involves the enhancement of ingredients to micro molecular sizes ( one nanometre is equivalent to one billionth of a metre), has caused an up-stir among consumer groups. They are afraid that the micro molecular nano-ingredients may infiltrate through the person’s skin and into the body’s system.

The two common ingredients which are being enhanced are Zinc Oxide and titanium oxide. They are often nanosized to transform them from being white and opaque to becoming transparent.

Despite the Therapeutic Goods Administration saying there is insufficient evidence that nano particles cause adverse health effects, most sunscreens now contain actives that are either micro fined (with a particle size that is much larger than the nano range) or have a chemical filter (to absorb rays within the skin and neutralise them) that is clear on the skin, so doesn’t require nanosizing.Whole spectrum UVB rays are known as the “burning” rays, but you may also have heard UVA light referred to as the “ageing” rays. A broad-spectrum sunscreen defends skin against both types. Presently , there isn’t a national protocol to perform UVA testing. This would mean that some wide-spectrum products will offer more superior protection than others , although there is no single product that can offer you 100% protection Some of the reputable wide-spectrum ingredients are zinc oxide, Helioplex ( used by Neutrogena ) and Mexoryl ( used by L’Oreal Paris and Centaphil).

The Vitamin D debate

Vitamin D is a hormone triggered by the sun that is essential for good health. However, the more we hear about the benefits of vitamin D, the more concerned experts are that we are forgoing sunscreen and risking skin cancer.

The key is to find a balance with safe sun care (for example, staying out of the midday danger period) in order to get just the right amount of sun exposure to clock up good vitamin D levels.

A useful tool to help you do this is the Cancer Council’s SunSmart iPhone app. Tailor it to suit your clothing coverage and location (and therefore the UV index) and the “sunscreen calculator” will tell you when to apply sunscreen and let you know how much you need.

Generally , you just need to abide by the “Spoon” law : a teaspoon-full of sunscreen for your face , neck and ears ; a teaspoon for each limb ; and a teaspoon each for the front and back of your body.

A majority of people have little knowledge about first and. This can lead to some chronic complications when an emergency situation crops us , and no one can anticipate when such emergencies will occur.

If we are are unclear of what to do during an emergency , how will our children in future know? As a matter of fact , we know much more than our children. This would mean that they can’t really help in chronic situations even if they wish to help out. Nonetheless, this doesn’t signify that you should not impart some knowledge of first aid to your kids. In the end, what if some accidents occur in the absence of adults? Or what if the adult is in midst of an emergency and the only people who are available to help are the children?

Ultimately, the methodology to teach your children about first aid is different from teaching adults , as the huge bulk of complication information will only leave them in a confusion state. They need to understand few basic ideas about first aid like putting pressure on a cut that is bleeding or cleaning a dirty wound properly. These are some of the fundamental first aid skills anyone should know , no matter how old they are.

Keeping a first aid kit in your home or in your car is the best way to make sure you can provide your loved ones with the first aid they may need. You need to have the appropriate and essential things in your first aid kit. Things such as bandages and alcohol wipes are a must have in a first aid kit. In addition, instant ice packs are wonderful since they do not need to be refrigerated before use. Ensure that you are equipped with all the medications and always check on the expiration data of the medication you possess in your first aid kit.

It is definitely beneficial for you to attend a basic first aid and CPR lesson , since a lot of things have changed in the last few years and there have been a massive improvement in the different methods and products Having a defibrillator device at home is also an advantage. It can use successfully to resuscitate a person experiencing a heart failure. An untrained individual in the proper usage of an AED or has never been before a CPR can also use a defibrillator to save a patient’s life by just reading the instructions.

It is an undeniable fact that reducing the risks of accidents at home or in any other place to zero is highly impossible. Hence, safety modifications can be made to lower the risk and prompt provision of emergency materials can help the victim in times of accidents. Also it is very important to know the basic steps on how to handle a person having an accident.

ONE of Australia’s most respected brain surgeons, Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld, is calling for every Victorian child to be trained in first aid.

The Alfred Hospital’s Director of Neurosurgery, who has treated Jim Stynes and Molly Meldrum, said compulsory first aid in schools would save lives, cut health bills and instil a sense of mateship in children.

Doctors, paramedics and first aid experts said even our youngest citizens can begin to learn the basics.

“First aid can make the difference, not just between life and death, but a poor outcome or a quality outcome,” Prof Rosenfeld said.

He said if a patient with a severe head injury missed out on crucial care in those first precious moments it could lead to irreversible damage that even the best brain surgeon in the world couldn’t fix.

“If you don’t do the right things in that golden hour, you are going to lose the patient no matter what you do later on.

“In many cases all you need to do is something very simple, such as put them in their correct position.”

Prof Rosenfeld, a St John’s Ambulance volunteer, said the skills required were broader than CPR.

“It’s severe bleeding, it’s people who are chocking, people with severe burns, fractures or snake bites,” he said.

St John’s Ambulance CEO Stephen Horton revealed that for the first time it will unveil a first aid pilot program that starts in kindergarten.

“The rollout would be limited, because we do have finite resources as a registered charity, so we would call on the Government to come to the party to fund that activity.”

Ambulance Victoria and the Red Cross also have age appropriate programs.

Australian Medical Association Victoria President Dr Harry Hemley said basic first aid was already offered to some Victorian students in years 9 and 10, but it should be expanded.

Dr Hemley said it could save lives, improve patient outcomes and prevent permanent disability.

“Far too few Australians know first aid and would not feel confident responding to a medical emergency,” Dr Hemley said.

Ambulance Victoria Regional Services general manager Associate Professor Tony Walker said it would support the accurate and appropriate development of first aid skills in the community.

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development spokeswoman said first aid was not compulsory, but it was a “recommended element of the school program”.

Australian Education Union state president Mary Bluett said it could be difficult to find room in the curriculum for compulsory first aid.

“I think we should have a debate about what is the community’s responsibility and what is the school’s responsibility.”

A lot of people in western societies usually love to go camping. It is the kind of family outing that people have enjoyed for many long years. Camping at the campground is considerably different as compared with roughing it in the wilderness. If you are planning to tough it out in the wilderness, you have got to take a few more steps to make sure that you are well prepared for that camping holiday trip. For sure, you are going to have some of the basic things that are needed when you go to a campground to camp, nevertheless you also must bring along additional stuff simply just to ensure that you will be prepared for anything. The best camping trips result from those people who prepare the most. The most effective way of preparing for a camping trip is to sit back and create a list. Set your checklist in different categories for instance, shelter, food, food related items, sleeping items, cooking and fire supplies, cleaning items and most importantly remember the first aid kit. Then while you pack for your trip it is possible to just check out your entire checklist to make sure that you have included everything.

Click here to view the embedded video.

One of the primary hazards of going out into the wilderness to camp is usually that you’re far away from some kind of help. The nearest place regarding assistance will probably be a ranger’s station. At a campground, there is usually somebody on the site or maybe you might have some other campers around to help just in case of an emergency. Getting encountered with the vast emptiness of the wilderness, you need to make sure that you pack an extensive first aid kit. Not just because you want to have the things that usually come inside of a first aid kit, but also you must also bring some extra first aid supplies. Some of the extra supplies that you really need to carry are a snakebite kit, waterproof matches, and also extra bandages. Personal medications should also be contained in the first aid kit and make sure you bring more than what you will need just in case you are faced with an extended stay caused by unexpected circumstances. If possible, include things like booklets of basic first aid methods in your kit.

As soon as you get there in the camp site, it is much better to show everyone exactly where you are going to put the first aid kit so everybody will probably be informed. Be sure to put it in a safe place protected from moisture and dust. It also needs to be placed in an area where everyone is able to see it easily. Keep in mind that having a complete first aid kit can help prevent severe injuries and can possibly save lives. First aid kits give everyone a protected and enjoyable camping adventure.

There’s a lot more we can do to protect children from sun damage.

The “slip, slop, slap” message is etched in most parents’ brains. For many it’s second nature to plonk hats on kids’ heads and slather sunscreen all over their bodies before letting them out in the sun.

However, as summer draws near, Australia still holds the unfavourable title of being the skin cancer capital of the globe. Children of all ages are suffering from sunburn and this will drastically heighten their chances of contracting skin cancer later in their life. Now, what other precautions can parents take to keep their children safe and sound from the menacing sun?

Summer isn’t safe

Just when you thought the weather is optimistic enough to bring your children out , the UV index ( which is a measurement of the intensity of the sun’s ultraviolet rays ) shoots up to undesirable levels, making the entire sun dangerous. Skin cancer experts are blunt: in the height of summer, children should not be out in the sun between 10am and 4pm.

“I don’t want to make parents afraid of letting their kids play outside, we have a great country to get out there and enjoy, but every time you go out in the sun, you’re cranking up your risk of skin cancer.”

The damage is dealt in the early stages

A person who suffers from a scorching sunburn during his childhood or teenage stage will double his chances of developing melanoma, the most potent form of skin cancer in the later stage of his life. According to the US Skin Cancer Foundation, the chances of a person getting melanoma will double if the person has had 5 or more than 5 sunburns at any stage of his life.

According to some, 99 % of non-melanoma skin cancers as well as 95% of melanoma skin cancers in Australia are attributed to intensive exposure to the sun. “Therefore, it is vital for us to shield our complexion from the sun no matter how old you are. It is specially essential for you to prevent exposure from the sun during your childhood stage.”

The Australian Cancer Council figures show that there are still 24 % of teenagers and 8% of children suffering sunburn on a usual summer weekend.

Sunscreen is not a completely foolproof remedy towards prevention of sunburns

Depending on sunscreen alone is just not sufficient enough to shield children from the sun. A sunscreen should be used as just a health supplement to wearing protective clothing and keeping yourself away from the sun. It must never be treated as your first line of defense towards sun burns.” “Most people don’t put on enough, cover all their exposed areas or reapply within two hours, all of which greatly lowers the effectiveness,”.

Use the UV index

Another good strategy to adopt is to study the UV index every single day. The World Health Organization highly recommends the usage of protective gear when the UV index shoots to level 3 or above. Typically , during the summer period in most of the parts in Australia, the UV index recorded is considerably high, much higher than this level.

We urge parents to schedule outings for early in the morning or after 4pm, when the UV index is at its lowest. “”However, if you are being invited to a kids” party at 12 pm, they will need to be fully geared up with sun-protective clothing , sunscreen , a hat , and most importantly, they must be kept away from the sun constantly.”

There are several mobile phone apps that provide real-time UV information, including SunSmart Victoria’s free app, which gives UV level and sun-protection times for anywhere in Australia.

<g:plusone href="http://gasupplies.com.au/wp/first-aid/aid-training"></g:plusone>

All of us are at least somewhat proficient in first aid. We know what to do if we get a small cut or wind up with a nose bleed. We don’t even necessarily call it first aid – we just know what to do. Some of us have had the misfortune of needing to apply first aid to someone else, whether from a kid being a kid, a fall down the stairs, or even maintaining a serious injury until medics arrive. Because of this, many people keep a first aid kit handy or get actual first aid training.

Anyone can put together a first aid kit, sometimes from supplies found around the house. These are great to keep easily accessible in the house or car. Many offices now keep them. There isn’t time to run around looking for supplies when someone has suffered a medical emergency. First aid needs to be applied immediately. A good first aid kit will contain essentials such as bandages, Neosporin, and compression wraps. Based on the location or line of work you’re in, you may need to include some specialized items. In an extreme injury, a first aid kit could save a life by halting blood loss while paramedics make their way to the scene.

Real commitment comes from completing an online first aid course. These courses aren’t overly taxing while still providing all the necessary information a first responder needs. The courses will explain how to deal with more than routine bumps and bruises, like broken bones and seizures. The courses are designed to be completed within a timeframe. You won’t have to rush to finish the testing within a small window. Once you complete the course, you are typically certified for two years.

If you have children, or work in a place where first aid is commonly needed for bumps and bruises, you probably already have your own personal first aid kit prepared. Take the next step and become certified in first aid. You will be better prepared to handle any situation, and the people around you will feel more comfortable because of it.

Hypersensitive reactions to insect stings

There are various biting insects throughout Australia, and a startling number of Aussies can be allergic to their stings. The most widespread allergic reactions develop due to stings from bees, wasps and ants.

The amount of reaction fluctuates greatly, with many individuals having no more than minor symptoms, for example, localised irritation and slight aggravation. Such people are not really regarded as ‘allergic’ to insect bites.

Some people, on the other hand, may have major allergy symptoms when stung, and a few deaths are recorded every year. Most stings normally occur in summer. A large number of bug stings basically bring about uncomfortableness and result in local pain and discomfort, itching, some swelling and redness at the place of the sting, and this is not really viewed as an allergic reaction. Localised treatment is in general all that is required to treat this kind of sting. In these instances, the region should be washed and antiseptics and ice applied to ease the swelling and general suffering. If the inflammation continues to build up, antihistamine or possibly steroid medication may be required. On infrequent occasions, the sting site may become infected and anti-biotics may be required to treat the problem.

What is an allergic attack?

The seriousness of allergic reactions varies from person to person. A large number of allergic reactions are minor, and produce just local swelling and also itching. Anaphylaxis is a severe form of allergic reaction, and this can be life threatening. It entails swelling involving the airways, breathlessness and a drop in blood pressure levels. Anaphylaxis can also occur just after exposure to a number of other triggers, for instance food products or drugs, as well as insect stings. Indications of severe allergic reactions can include: rash and intense itchiness around locations in addition to the sting site; swollen eyelids; coughing along with problems in breathing; difficulty in eating because of inflammation of the tongue, as well as hoarseness; and wooziness and even fainting – this can be a very serious response. Severe allergic reactions usually show up within just a matter of minutes of the sting, but yet might arise up to twenty four hours following the sting. Cases of extreme allergic reaction are really a medical emergency situation and need to have speedy medical treatment.

Treating insect allergies

Whenever stung by a bee or a wasp, do not pull out or squeeze the sting that may be left in the skin because this causes additional venom to be released. The sting should really be taken out by way of scraping it sideways employing a fingernail, blunt knife or like item. Anaphylactic reactions need to be treated with adrenaline. Now there are self-injectable instruments (including the EpiPen) readily available for people with known allergic reactions. Those with known anaphylactic reactions, regardless if to insect stings, particular food items or maybe various other triggers, are advised to have the unit at all times. These types of devices are already filled up with with adrenaline and should be injected into the muscles at the front of the upper leg. Most of these types of device carry only one dose, and people really should be taken to hospital right after the adrenaline injection – in case they need to have further doses and for professional observation.

With more natural options obtainable than previously, you are able to rest easy with the knowledge that you need not count on medications which can be filled with nasty chemicals, it is possible to alternatively choose a more all-natural alternative when it comes to the health and well-being of your self and your loved ones. While many of us live in a safe, home environment you may never really foresee when you or a family member is going to trip over and get injured. If the incident doesn’t require a visit to your neighbourhood doctor there’s no good reason why you can’t resolve the problem in the convenience of your home which is just why having a couple natural remedies in your home first aid kit is such a good idea.

Just a couple of drops of a homoeopathic remedy known as Arnica underneath the tongue helps with reducing the negative effects of some bruising and reduces the recovery time in half. It is well suited to be utilized straight after a minor surgery such as dental work and osteopathic cures. It particularly comes in handy when travelling.

Cuts along with scratches call for immediate care so that you can avoid the risk of an awful infection. Calendula is a yellow/orange flower that although a little pungent, is a extremely efficient antiseptic that can easily be purchased as either a ointment or a gel.

When muscular aches and pains hit, a little dosage (200mg to 400mg) of Magnesium two or three times per day can really help to ease the discomfort and pain you are feeling, whilst reducing inflammation and cramping pains. For a quick fix, a lukewarm bath with some Epsom salts will also relax the muscles and tendons and ease discomfort after a rough day.

In the event that you need a organic therapy that is more suited to emotional distress, then Bach Rescue Remedy is all you may need to sooth yourself after an emotional crisis or shock.

If there is a organic remedy that is simply Australian it would certainly have to be Tea Tree Oil. Made from the native tea tree, tea tree oil may help to speed up the renewal of skin cells, therefore making it great for application on abrasions and scrapes. It additionally provides anti-bacterial components and is an effective anti fungal agent which can be used to start treating a range of unique skin conditions such as athletes’ foot.

Health professionals claim that whenever a person goes into cardiac arrest, regular heart function may be recovered up to sixty per-cent of the time as long as the victim is worked on right away with the help of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

AEDs really are computerized electrical units that can check a person’s heart rhythm, recognise a tempo that calls for a shock, as well as advise emergency responders whenever a shock is essential. AEDs make use of speech prompts, lights, and also text messages in order to advise rescuers.

For what reason are AEDs getting to be common in the workplace?

OSHA advises that roughly 890 deaths as a result of coronary heart disease happen outside the medical facility or emergency room daily. A large number of fatalities result from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). And quite a lot of these SCA-related fatalities happen in businesses. That’s why large numbers of office buildings are getting AEDs to have an extra essential first-aid approach to protect their staff on-site. Although costs vary, a number of types are offered for between $1,500 and $2,000.

Just how can AEDs save life?

SCA results when ventricular fibrillation (VF) takes place or when the heart ceases beating altogether. Causative factors include: Cardiac Arrest, Electrocution, and Asphyxiation. Most often heart attack can be due to VF, which is explained as the uncoordinated beating of the heart. Regular rhythm may be restored if addressed quickly with electric shock. The earlier defibrillation begins, the more likely the sufferer will live. Chances of survival because of sudden cardiac arrest lessen by 7-10 per cent for every minute without urgent CPR or defibrillation. The best possible time for defibrillation is 3 to 5 minutes after the onset of cardiac arrest. Because it can take longer than that for the ambulance to come, getting an AED on-site could possibly be a lifesaver. Needless to say, even with an AED always ready, an urgent telephone call needs to be placed in to emergency services any time a worker goes into cardiac arrest while at work. Follow-up health care at a hospital center is likely to be important.

What about training sessions?

Workers designated to operate AEDs have to be thoroughly trained in the most effective use of the defibrillator. They must be also trained in CPR. Right after an AED supplies a shock, it generally requests the operator to continue CPR while the unit goes on to analyze and track the patient. The reasons why this is important.Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of loss of life in the country and it is a leading factor for disability. The most common coronary disease in the United States Of America is coronary heart disease, which often presents itself as a heart attack. In 2010, around 785,000 American citizens had a new coronary attack, and approximately 470,000 experienced a recurrent attack.About each 25 seconds, an American is going to have a coronary event, and approximately one every minute will die from one. OSHA states as many as 60 percent of fatalities could possibly be prevented if automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are easily available and properly used.
